Earthquakes are Natural but they sure aren’t Good for Nature
The earthquakes and the ensuing human tragedy in Haiti is on everyone’s mind. Hopefully their towns, homes and culture will be re-built soon and be better and safer than before. However, in the clean up process there will be environmental fallout that nobody as focused on yet.
We tend to think that if something happens in nature that causes damage it might be devastating and tragic but somehow the environmental effects are excusable. The truth is that disasters of this sort have a serious environmental impact:
Release of Toxins
Debris and Waste lead to landfill
Air & Water pollution
Rotting Bodies with lack of appropriate burial
Degradation of the ecosystem
It’s yet another reason to be aware of the man made materials you use in your daily life and to be vigilant in where they come from and where they might end up.
